Jim Corbett National Park, located in the Nainital district of Uttarakhand, is one of India’s most renowned wildlife sanctuaries, celebrated for its incredible biodiversity.

Flora (Plant Life)

The park’s landscape is covered with lush greenery dominated by sal forests, khair, sissoo, and bamboo. More than 600 species of trees, shrubs, herbs, climbers, and grasses thrive here. The dense sal and deciduous forests create a perfect canopy for many wild species, while the grasslands—known as chaurs—serve as grazing grounds for herbivores. The Ramganga River and its tributaries support aquatic plants and add to the park’s ecological diversity.

Corbett’s vegetation is rich and varied due to its altitudinal range and rainfall pattern.

Fauna

Jim Corbett is home to over 50 species of mammals, 600 species of birds, and 25 species of reptiles. The park is world-famous for being the first tiger reserve under India’s Project Tiger, making it one of the best places to spot the Royal Bengal Tiger. Other major animals include Asian elephants, leopards, sambar deer, spotted deer (chital), barking deer, wild boar, langurs, and sloth bears.
Bird watchers can spot species such as the Crested Serpent Eagle, Himalayan Kingfisher, Great Hornbill, and various migratory birds. Reptiles like crocodiles, monitor lizards, and pythons are also commonly seen near water bodies.

Birds of Jim Corbett

The dense sal and deciduous forests, along with open grasslands, create perfect nesting and feeding grounds for them.

Migratory Birds

During the winter months, Jim Corbett becomes a haven for migratory birds that arrive from as far as Central Asia, Europe, and the Himalayas. Species like the Great Hornbill, Black Stork, Greylag Goose, River Tern, and Steppe Eagle can be spotted near rivers, lakes, and marshy areas. The Ramnagar and Sitabani zones are particularly popular for birding tours, especially from November to February, when migratory activity peaks.

Birding Hotspots in Corbett

The Dhikala Zone is considered the best birdwatching area within the park, offering sightings of raptors, water birds, and forest species. Bijrani, Jhirna, and Dhela zones also host excellent bird diversity. Outside the park boundaries, Sitabani Forest Reserve is another birding hotspot known for species like the Collared Falconet and Grey-headed Fish Eagle.
